Concern over flooding across the county
At long last I managed a holiday abroad with my wife and some of the family, a welcome break from Westminster.
Whilst away I was concerned to learn that parts of Ayrshire had been subjected to serious flooding and that local authorities, Scottish Water, SEPA and the emergency services were all attempting to mitigate the effects of the torrential rain and assist with clear up operations. Thank you to those who worked in these difficult conditions with the aim of providing support to my constituents.
Immediately upon my return home, I continued with my round of “summer” surgeries visiting, the South Ayrshire villages of Ballantrae, Colmonell and Barrhill, to be followed by Dailly and Kirkmichael and in East Ayrshire, Dalrymple. The extent and beauty of the Ayrshire countryside with its many hidden historical gems never ceases to amaze me. A good opportunity to catch up with more of my constituents. The last Friday in August I will be in Bellsbank, Patna, Stair and Rankinston. I note that two issues previously brought to my attention the fate of both Victory Park, Girvan and the Riverside Place Flats, Ayr remain in contention for many of my Constituents, I do hope that in both instances common sense will prevail for the good of the communities. Iwas pleased to be asked to open the Associated British Ports ( ABP) new Agribulk facility at the Port of Ayr and it was great to learn of the many local companies involved in this venture. As I write, I am looking forward to attending the Cumnock Highland Games, hopefully in the sunshine. What of Westminster? Well according to unofficial reports it remains in a state of flux - with Europe appearing to be entrenched and apparently rejecting any further approaches by the new PM; some politicians wishing to take votes of no confidence and seeking to assume the role of caretaker PM; other politicians wishing the autumn party conferences to be cancelled and some political commentators predicting an early General Election.
Only time will tell what truly lies ahead for us, I am returning to Parliament on September 3, with an open mind to be updated on the official version of events.
