Staff to make a splash for charity

A family business will walk the length of a river to raise cash for charity.

Peacock Salt will raise £ 10,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support and Whiteleys Retreat next month.

And workers at the salt distributo­r plan to walk the whole length of the River Ayr.

Gregorie Marsha l l , Director, said: “We have ambitiousl­y chosen to walk the whole length of the River Ayr – some 70km - in two team stages meeting in the middle. It will be a tough challenge for all of us and hopefully we can raise a good amount for both great charities.”

Macmillian fundraisin­g manager, Michelle Jeffcott, said: “We can’t do what we do without the amazing people who fundraise for us.” Maxine Allan, CEO at Whiteleys, said, “We are absolutely blown over with the support from the team at Peacock Salt.”

A Labour MSP has slammed a recent rise in rail fares.

Colin Smyth hit out at the price increase which will affect passengers across Ayrshire.

A season ticket between Ayr and Glasgow will rise by £ 70 in January to £ 2602.

That will come in at just over £ 50 a week while the price for a commuter driving the same distance five days a week, at the average price of 12 pence per- mile for an engine size up to 1400, would be £ 44.

And the price without a season ticket currently comes in at £ 16.30 a day during peak time.

South Scotland MSP Colin Smyth said: “These rail fare rises are unwanted, unwelcome and unnecessar­y.

“It is simply unfair that commuters across Ayrshire are being burdened with these rip- off rail fares for less than satisfacto­ry services.
