25 YEARS AGO

The man with no name caused a flurry of excitement at Turnberry.

Superstar Clint Eastwood made several people’s say when he turned up for a game of golf on the famous championsh­ip course.

Clint was in Scotland for a private holiday and it is rumoured to look for a future film project based on the book ‘ Golf in the Kingdom ‘ starring Sean Connery.

Coming off the 18th green, Clint said: “I played a BAD game, but I really enjoyed it and the course is something else.”

50 YEARS AGO

A suggestion from the Magistrate­s’ Committee that the Freedom of the Royal Burgh of Ayr be conferred on both Sir Thomas Moore, former conservati­re MP for the constituen­cy, and Lieutenant Commander John Hamilton, formerly of Rozelle, was unanimousl­y adopted by Ayr Town Council on Monday.

Lt Cmr Hamilton gifted the mansion, gardens and woodland at Rozelle Estate for the community of Ayr as an open- air and recreation­al centre.

100 YEARS AGO

Ayr Town Council have resolved not to grant an applicatio­n for the use of the Town Hall for a boxing performanc­e.

A rare occurence is reported from Barr. A blackfaced ewe belonging to Doughty Farm has given birth to twins - one a blackfaced lamb and the other a cross. Old shepherds are agreed this is a first for the upland parish.

The rescue of a boy from drowning in Ayr Harbour by David McLean, a discharged soldier, is being reported to the Carnegie Hero Fund trustees for gallantry..
