Candidates to lock horns in SNP battle

- SARAH HILLEY

Ex MP Corri Wilson and former councillor Allan Dorans are battling to become the local SNP candidate in the event of a general election.

Ms Wilson and Mr Dorans will go head to head as part of an SNP bid to wrestle the Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock constituency from the Conservatives.

SNP members will choose between them in a ballot.

Ms Wilson called to be “sent back” to Westminster to “finish the job I started.”

Announcing her decision on Twitter, she said: “If selected I will be able to use my past experience and knowledge to hit the ground running, which I believe is a must at this pivotal time in our country’s history.”

The Ayr West SNP branch nominated Mr Dorans unanimously to go through to the next round of the selection process.

The former South Ayrshire SNP group leader and councillor for Ayr West said: “I was humbled by the goodwill, friendship and support of the members present and I am proud to represent them.”

Mr Dorans is a 64- year- old grandfather- of- one who lives in Ayr.

He is a former Met Police Detective Inspector.

Corri Wilson is a grandmother- ofone, aged 54 and was a civil servant.

Mr Dorans wrote the SNP’s manifesto in the run up to the last council election.

Other SNP candidates could still enter the race for parliament but they must have passed a vetting process.

The party’s online and postal ballot will take place between October 10 and 24 or sooner in the event of an early election being announced.

Ms Wilson was MP between 2015 and 2017 before current Conservative MP Bill Grant ousted her with a 2,774 majority.

SNP Westminster parliamentary leader MP Ian Blackford is understood to be backing Ms Wilson for the seat. She was an Ayr East councillor in the past.
