25 YEARS AGO

A proud moment for seven- yearold David Oldham of Ayr Grammar School as he helps Ayr MP Phil Gallie plant an ash tree.

The occasion was the opening of the sparkling new Safeway store in Castlehill Road. Young David had won a pre- opening art competitio­n for local schools to gain the honour of cutting the tape and planting a tree.

Also there were Provost Gibson Macdonald and Safeway manager Neil McDougall, a former Ayr Academy pupil.

50 YEARS AGO

Mr Leslie H Wilson, Victoria Park, Ayr, who died in July of last year at the age of 83, left assets valued at £ 1,266,046 according to his will. The son of a Paisley muslin manufactur­er, he was founder of the Glasgow stockbroki­ng firm of Wilson, Scott and Co and was an active member of the Glasgow Stock Exchange until he died. He was a racehorse owner and member of the Western Meeting, an active fisherman, marksman and member at Prestwick Golf Club. He donated the ground for Castlehill Church.

100 YEARS AGO

Considerab­le amusement was createdin the course of evidence in an undefended divorce action.

James Sutherland wrote that he would not live with his wife again “even if she were studded with diamonds.”

Jean Clark, 44 Smith Street, married in the town in 1908. She made the acquaintan­ce of the defender while she assisted in her mother’s tearooms in 1906. By 1914 he was sending her abusive letters and had pledged her engagement ring.

Lord Anderson granted decree.
