Bells and bows are jingling for AFO

Bows are rosined, strings are tuned, bells are jingling.

The Ayrshire Fiddle Orchestra are ready for weeks of Flurrying Festive Fiddlin’.

On Sunday they had the honour of leading Santa’s Parade in Ayr High Street while another group played at Troon’s Wintertain­ment in Troon Old Parish Church.

This Sunday, November 24, they will give a performanc­e at St Nicholas Church at the start of Prestwick’s Lighting Up celebratio­ns.

And then – The Big One on Saturday November 30 where they will welcome everyone to their fantastic Christmas Fayre in Ayr Town Hall.

The event runs from 10am till 2pm.

As always the Town Hall will be transforme­d into an Aladdin’s Cave with all the colour of craft stalls, tombola, books.

CDs and DVDs and much more together with games for the children. While you enjoy the great home baking, refreshmen­ts, - and this year, if you prefer , soup and a roll

from 12 noon - the Orchestra will be entertaini­ng you with lots of their famous energetic rhythmic fiddling on stage.

And then, on Saturday December 14, the Annual Christmas Concert, again in Ayr Town Hall, will feature jigs, reels as well as rousing festive tunes.

Doug Allan, one of the cameramen behind shows such as Blue Planet, will be speaking for the Royal Scottish Geographic­al Society in Ayr on Wednesday, November 27.

As part of the Society’s Inspiring People talks programme, Dunfermlin­e- born Doug will be sharing stories from his sparkling career spent documentin­g the mightiest animals on the planet- whales.

From Antarctica to the Arctic and coral reefs to California, Dougwho is an Honorary Fellow of RSGS and recipient of their prestigiou­s Mungo Park Medal– will guide his audience t h r o u g h t h e underwater filmmaking process, discussing some of the nation’s best loved TV moments.

And, along the way, he’ll describe the central role of scientists and boat handlers in capturing these sequences… as well as a healthy dose of luck!

Doug said: “The RSGS Inspiring People talks programme is outreach at its best – it’s a privilege to be a contributo­r this coming season.

“For me, it’s all about making the audience feel that not only are they sharing my enthusiasm, but that they too are inspired to follow their own passions.”

Sir David Attenborou­gh, in a letter to the RSGS, said: “Doug is not like other men.

“He seems impervious to cold. He can hold his breath underwater longer than anyone I know.

“He delights in company – particular­ly if he can find someone who has not heard his jokes – yet he can tolerate, even welcome long periods of total solitude.

“And he has that mixture of physical bravery, technical skill and zoological expertise that you need if you are to be one of the greatest of natural history c a m e r a m e n . Which he is.”

Doug will be speaking in Ayr on Wednesday, November 27 at 7.30pm at t h e C o u n c i l Chambers, Ayr Town Hall.
