Marr keep their title bid on track
Marauding Marr Rugby Club’s Premiership title tilt remains on track – after stretching their unbeaten run.
The Fullarton men ran in nine tries in a romp over Aberdeen Grammar on Saturday.
Marr lead by a point in the race for the silverware and welcome Jed Forest this weekend in a crunch clash for the Bill McLaren Shield.
Elsewhere, the Ayrshire Bulls bagged their first win as a new semi pro side, beating Boroughmuir Bears.
Marr maintained their hot run at the top of the Tennent’s Premiership with a Fullarton try blitz on Saturday.
The 1st XV ran in four scores in the opening 15 minutes to all but secure the win.
And the bonus point victory included a further five tries as Marr looked at their imperious best.
The biggest cheer of the day was reserved for the 74th minute as Conor Bickerstaff made a line break from midway inside Marr’s half.
And as he was about to be tackled he put in a grubber kick which Greg Montgomery chased and hacked on three times before the ball finally bobbed up and into the arms of Fraser Grant who had raced 60 metres in support and he crossed the line to touch down.
It was a solid and improving performance that pleased Marr’s coaches, especially Kenny Diffenthal who is lead for the backs.
Tries came from Colin Sturgeon ( 2), Jack Scott, Conor Bickertsaff, Ollie Rossi, Greg Montgomery ( 2), Scott Bickerstaff and Fraser Grant.
Three of the tries were straight lifts from training ground moves with the forwards providing a perfect platform for the backs to exploit and they did with power, pace and importantly precision.
Marr remain unbeaten after the first half of the season and hold a single point lead over Currie Chieftains.
In the race for the end of season four Premiership play off places, both clubs are in a strong position with a 16 point advantage over the chasing pack.
Last season’s runners up Jed- Forest visit Troon this Saturday, determined to relieve Marr of the Bill Mclaren Shield.
Saturday sees Marr’s fourth defence of this prestigious trophy and if they withstand Jed’s onslaught they will become one of the few clubs to be allowed to have their name engraved on the shield.
• Elsewhere at the weekend, Marr’s 2nd XV were beaten 30- 12 by Hamilton Bulls with tries coming from Alexander McCormack and Callum Steel.
The 3rd XV beat Ardrossan Academicals 2s 66- 10 with tries from Euan McGerty ( 3), Neil Campion ( 2), Gareth Abbot, Kyle Young, Jason Doolan, Thomas Watkins and Roddy McIntyre.
