A hair salon have slammed the decision to exclude them from a best Christmas window display competition.

The festive gang at the Carnegie Hairdressing salon on River Street, Ayr, always make an effort to get into the Christmas spirit.

Every year the hairdressers dress up in festive gear and for 20 years they have spent a fortune on window displays.

This year their loyal customers had hoped they would be considered in the best display in Ayr competition. But organiser, Norman McLean, denied them of that opportunity – because they are too far from the Town Centre.

Salon owner Gino Carnegie said: “It just seems a bit ‘ bah humbug’ to be honest. We feel really disappointed.

“We have been trying to get involved for the past five years but didn’t know how.

“For us it’s just about trying to make a wee effort, getting into the Christmas spirit and helping make the town look nice. Our clients always ask us why we aren’t nominated.”

The salon is situated just over the Auld Brig, which connects Ayr High Street to River Street.

Gino says he has tried to apply for three hour parking for his customers for years – but he’s not been allowed because the Council consider them to be in the Town Centre.

He added: “The actual catchment area is Fort,

Seafield and Wallacetown and we are in Wallacetown so I just find it a bit odd we are not considered.

“We don’t just do Christmas, we have a display all year round, we are kind of known for that now.

“It would just be nice to be considered. I hope they reconsider for next year.”

Now, in the true spirit of Christmas, Norman has declared he may reconsider his original decision.

Norman said: “We have to draw the line somewhere and as Carnegie’s is over the river we did not consider that to be in the Town Centre. However I will have a look into this and if the salon is considered to be in Wallacetown we will include them in this year ’ s competition – as well as future contests.”
