Spend a pound for loos
Public toilets have been sold for £ 1 by South Ayrshire Council.
Councillors agreed to flog village lavatories to the Colmonell Community Association.
Council officials wanted £ 500 for the block but politicans insisted it should be much less.
The toilets are worth £ 5000 according to surveyors.
T h e c o m m u n i t y association wants to reopen the loos for free use and install disabled toilets.
Residents hope to install an outdoor tap and electrical socket.
Association members asked to purchase them through a community asset transfer.
The public convenience has been closed for a number of years.
And a village survey in 2016 found reopening them was a priority for the area.
Speaking at last week’s leadership panel, SNP Councillor Peter Henderson said: “It will be an asset for tourism and the community. If we don’t transfer this over the costs to the council will increase.”
He suggested a price of £ 50. SNP Councillor William Grant said: “I would be prepared to accept a £ 1.”
Volunteers intends to clean the toilets on a rota basis. The community association also plan to finance ongoing maintenance and other running costs by applying for funding and raising money.
The pro p e r ty was advertised for sale by the council but there was little interest.
The council installed new doors and made the property wind and water tight. Broken cisterns were also replaced along with the sink, which was vandalised.
A council paper presented to councillors said: “The former public convenience will be reopened for the benefit of the community of Colmonell including residents, visitors and tourists to the area.”
