Festive blitz against drink and drug driving

-

Police have launched their annual campaign against drink driving- with drug drivers also being targeted.

This is the first campaign since the introduction of new roadside drug detection kits in October 2019 and officers have warned of a “zero tolerance” approach to drivers found with drugs in their system.

Police in East Ayrshire last week launched a series of local activities, in support of the national campaign, to raise awareness on the consequences of driving while under the influence of drink or drugs.

Chief Inspector Steven Meikle, Area Commander for East Ayrshire, said: “Driving while under the influence can have devastating consequences. Officers are working alongside colleagues in our Divisional Roads Policing Unit to identify and arrest those who choose to put their own and other people’s lives at risk by getting behind the wheel after drinking alcohol or taking drugs.

“As a community we need to keep hammering home the message that this is unacceptable- the only safe amount to drink before driving is none.

“We have always had the power to deal with drug- driving but now we have better powers and the ability to conduct a test at the roadside. We have already seen positive test results and drivers arrested in East Ayrshire since the test kits were introduced recently.”

Officers have been working with various community groups, schools and partners to promote road safety in the area and to encourage conversations to discourage driving while under the influence and ensure getting home safely is part of the planning stages for a good night out.

A number of local licensed premises are participating in the East Ayrshire Best Bar None initiative and offer free soft drinks to drivers as part of a Designated Driver Scheme.

Chief Inspector Meikle added: “Unfortunately there is a persistent minority of drivers who continue to ignore the law- you can expect to be caught and when you are, you will face the full force of the law. Our message is simple- don’t risk it.”
