National legend set for Ayr visit

Racecourse to stage top preview night

- IAIN FERGUSON

A star studded Cheltenham Preview Dinner is to be held at Western House Hotel on Friday March 6 and what a brilliant night it promises to be.

Three of the top names in racing – Peter Scudamore, Tony Dobbin and Brian Hughes – will be on the panel answering questions and giving their expert opinions on all the major races at the Festival.

Peter is one of the all- time greats of the sport and an eight time champion jockey.

He rode 1,678 winners including 13 at the Cheltenham Festival which were highlighted by two Champion Hurdle wins.

His other notable successes included two Scottish Grand Nationals on Little Polveir ( 1987) and Captain Dibble ( 1992).

Scu is assistant trainer to his partner Lucinda Russell and he has enjoyed great success in that role helping to train 2017 Grand National winner One For Arthur.

Tony, who rode more than 1,200 winners, was one of the best riders of his generation and famously won the 1997 Grand National on Lord Gylenne – the only time the great race was held on a Monday after a bomb hoax saw the course evacuated the previous Saturday.

Dobbs was stable jockey firstly to Gordon Richards and then his son Nicky for many years and among the horses he rode was the legendary Monet’s Garden on whom he won 13 times including on his debut at Ayr.

He also rode several winners at the Cheltenham Festival.

The Western House audience are in for a treat as this will be the only Cheltenham preview Dobbs, now assistant to trainer to wife Rose, will be participating in.

Current jockey Brian has more than 1,100 winners to date and is once again locked in a battle with Richard Johnson at the top of the Jockey Championship .

Known throughout racing as a form guru who studies each race he rides in, Brian has ridden on or against many of the leading horses who will be lining at up at Cheltenham is better equipped than most to give his views on the major races. Brian will also have several rides at the Festival.

The evening will be chaired by Iain Ferguson, Head of PR and Raceday Presenter at Ayr Racecourse.

Tickets, priced £ 50 and including a three course meal, are on sale at the Racecourse and Western House and can be booked now.
