TIME TO MAKE MY MARK Boss ready to lead on the park
Mark Kerr admits he will have to ditch his tracksuit to put Ayr United back on track.
The new boss in boots says he will lead from the front on the park in a bid to boost the team’s form.
Kerr watched in frustration from the sidelines during a third defeat on the trot at Inverness.
Now the midfielder, who was one of Ayr’s most influential players before a thigh strain in September, is ready for another run.
He said: “I’m not afraid to show leadership on the park by playing.
“I don’t want this being all about me, which is why, ideally, I wouldn’t have to play. It’s inevitable that so much of the focus is now on me and whether I’m in the team or not.
“But that comes with the responsibility of the job and I have to stand up and take that on my shoulders.”
The reality that Ayr have badly missed Kerr as a player has quickly dawned with form dipping in his absence.
And even a 15- minute cameo in the Highlands on Saturday gave fans a glimpse of what he could do, with Ayr looking far more composed for his arrival. Kerr said: “The boys are probably short of confidence just now, so we just need to build that up again and a couple of decent results will do that.
“With the likes of myself and Steven Bell back from injury, and Luke McCowan back from suspension, we can hopefully give the spine of the team a much stronger look.”
Ayr were hoping to beat the Met Office weather warning for last night’s ( Tuesday) visit of Arbroath before welcoming Alloa on Saturday.
Kris Doolan remains sidelined with his ankle knock. Craig Moore has still to sign his new contract offer.
