Kelpies sculptor’s bid to save iconic statue
Concern that bronze legend Icarus could topple
Kelpies sculptor Andy Scott is involved in saving one of Ayrshire’s most iconic statues.
It comes after fears the eight foot high Greek legend Icarus could topple.
For the past 16 years the bronze sculpture has adorned the entrance to the Scottish International Aerospace Park at Prestwick. It was created by ace sculptor Andy and cast by Beltane Studios in Peebles.
But an inspection has uncovered “serious issues” with the structure.
Andy, who now lives in Philadelphia, said: “I am initiating the process of having repairs carried out.
“My colleagues carried out an inspection and then did cosmetic repairs last year, but there is imminent need for more serious restoration works. It seems there are indeed some more important issues to be resolved and these are apparently down to flaws.”
Andy is behind public works such as the Kelpies horses near Falkirk and the Arria mermaid at Cumbernauld.
Thousands of drivers pass Icarus every day - and some think he’s a double for former Celtic striker John Hartson.
Foundry boss Iomhar Maciver from Beltane offered to clean up Icarus.
But he said: “We can’t make any official comment until we see an official survey.
“But from the photos there appears to be no major problems and the statue needs a very good clean. It is highly unlikely that any problems are anything to do with the casting process as we adhere to the highest standards.”
On most days Icarus is hit by moist salty air from the sea just half a mile away.
In Greek mythology Icarus flew too close to the sun and his wax wings melted. He fell into the sea and drowned.
A Scottish Enterprise spokesman said: “The sculpture is regularly inspected and as of this week no issues have been reported to us. We will continue to carry out routine maintenance as needed and to monitor the situation.”
