It’s time councillors stood behind community leader
The great ‘ Fawlty Towers’ debacle - aka the proposed demolition of the Riverside Place high flats – may have dropped out of the headlines but not off the radar! Keeping the pot boiling furiously are Fort, Seafield and Wallacetown Community Council - and I commend them for their hard work and diligence.
The latest depth charge into the murky waters of SAC’s decision making is a ravaging letter from their chairman, the redoubtable Norman McLean. Armed with formidable facts, contradictory figures and backed by incontestable expert opinion – Mr McLean blows a colander of holes into South Ayrshire Council’s rational for any demolition. “The decision to demolish does not stand scrutiny,” he says. “There has been no valid structural of practical reason put forward, given the irregularities in the presentation on which the Council made their decision”. We submit that there is now a clear case for having the Council decision reconsidered in the interests of the residents’ welfare and the prudent use of public money”. But will there be any form of scrutiny - never mind further discussion – by SAC? I wouldn’t bet on it. Not unless our elected members start looking in the mirror - and ask if they are truly representing the needs of the people who elected them.
Norman McLean has stood up to represent those who cannot represent themselves. It’s time some elected member grew a pair and stood up beside him!
