Licensed trade weren’t just here for the beer
Running a bar or hotel can be terrible for your social life.
So when a group of publicans get together there is always a barrel load, literally, of fun to be had.
And this remarkable image from Corinne Bender of The Chestnuts Hotel captured the camaraderie of an away day in the summer of 1987. Over 30 years tens of thousands of pounds was raised for good causes by the group with the rather now old fashioned name of the Ayr and
District Ladies Auxiliary ( ADLA).
Corinne Bender, now 86, found this lovely picture in her archives.
This outing was in July 1987 when they were entertained by Long John distillery on London Road in Glasgow’s east end. The group were folded five years ago. She added: “Thousands of pounds were raised for charities, including for multiple sclerosis which we did every year.
“For the 25th anniversary of ADLA I added up all the money we had made and it came to £ 140,000. “
Corinne has managed to piece together most of the people in the photo.
