Marr reserves turn on style as storm hits

MARR ............... 36 GHK ................... 10

On a very wet and windy Saturday domestic rugby was almost wiped out by Storm Dennis.

But it was matched and defeated at Fullarton as GHK and Marr Rugby’s second XVs showed the brave few on the touchline that you actually can play good passing and running showing rugby.

Superb skill levels were on display in the inclement conditions.

And credit goes to the players from both sides who gave their all in extremely challenging weather.

The match was originally scheduled to be played at Old Anniesland but with issues there on access to a playable pitch there was agreement that the fixture be played in Troon.

As kick- off approached the inconvenience of a no show of the match official was the major challenge.

A pre- match huddle of coaches, captains and club officials followed and concluded that 40 players wanted to play a competitive match so there was agreement that Marr Rugby’s available qualified referee, Ewan Hamilton- Bulger, would step in and act as referee.

Playing into the gale force wind Marr got off to a flying start as with only five minutes on the clock Tom Steven make a blistering 70 metre break to score in the corner.

On 20 minutes GHK finally were rewarded for their efforts as their right winger managed to shrug off two tacklers and score in the corner.

The tricky conversion was added to give GHK the lead.

This was shortlived as Marr scored just after the restart.

Winning a lineout on half way, Marr’s pack set up a drive and Scott Rodger peeled off the back of this to race 30 metres into midfield and set up a perfect platform for the move to end with Josh Harvey powering through the final defenders.

Five minutes later he added his second as once again he bulldozed his way through to the line.

GHK added a penalty to level the scores but once again were immediately punished by Marr with Harvey adding his third as he touched down after another great example of power and pace with forwards and backs showing great skill levels in the challenging conditions.

Gregor Beckwith added the extra points to give Marr a half- time lead of 17- 10.

Marr got the second half off to a perfect start as Callum Craig blasted his way through the heart of the GHK defence to race in from 20 metres out.

With the wind behind him Beckwith added the extra points.

With the wind behind them Marr started to dominate possession and territory.

Only some great defence from GHK prevented the floodgates opening.

However, they could stop Marr’s captain Josh Evans who was in blistering form as he rampaged through the heart of the defence at will.

His efforts were rewarded with adding Marr’s final try to end the match with Marr running out comfortable victors.
