BASKETBALL
AYR STORM BC
It was a busy Saturday at Belmont Academy for Ayr Storm’s youth teams. First up were the Under- 14 boys in a Strathclyde League match with Glasgow Rens.
On paper it looked like it would be a highly competitive game and the big crowd weren’t disappointed by some strong play from both teams.
Some smart footwork and finishing under the basket from Angus Garvie helped give Ayr a narrow lead after the first quarter 17- 14.
Garvie’s younger brother, Calum, then entered the fray and made an immediate impact both on defence and by firing home a three pointer on the other end of the court.
The game still remained firmly in the balance at half- time with the home side leading 32- 28.
Some excellent pressure defence from Sean Hillis at the beginning of the third helped swing the momentum Storm’s way.
Ten points apiece from captain, George Stergiopoulos, and Kyle Academy’s Richie Skilling, saw Ayr finish the quarter with an 18- point lead.
It was a captain’s performance from Stergiopoulos, who rounded off the game’s scoring with a trademark three, his third of the day, on his way to a game high 31 points.
Top scorers, G. Stergiopoulos ( 31), R. Skilling ( 18), AGarvie ( 14).
Head Coach, Laura Nisbet, said: “The boys worked exceptionally hard today, and they needed to with the challenge Rens set them.
“All 11 boys played their part and should take a lot of confidence from this result.”
The club’s Under- 18 women faced Dunfermline/ Boroughmuir in the inaugural National League Division 2.
Captain Melissa Graham opened the scoring to send Ayr on their way to a 17- 5 first quarter lead.
Seven of 13 year- old, Louise Fisher’s game high 17 points came in the second period, and helped take Storm into the half- time interval 39- 23 ahead.
