Flat couple and dog saved from blaze
Firefighters rescued a dog and its owner trapped in a blazing flat in Ayr.
The pet had to be carried away on a stretcher after fire swept through a property in the town’s Weaver Street.
Four fire engines raced to the blaze that broke out in the ground- floor flat just before 10am on Sunday.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing eing residents lying on the grass outside side wrapped in foil blankets and received CPR.
A 43- year- old man broke the kitchen window and jumped d out while firefighters rescued his s 46- year- old partner.
And the dog was given oxygen n therapy via ‘ smoky paws’– a pet lifesaving feng oxygen mask – before being taken to Vets 4 Pets just yards down wn the road.
Vets 4 Pets later reported the dog doing “very well” while the couple uple were transferred to Ayr Hospital and treated for smoke inhalation.
Georgina ‘ Gee’ Roger, 37, who lives ives in the flat above with her cat, said she was in a panic when she raised the alarm.
She said: “There’s a very fine layer of soot and the stink is vile but we’re safe.
“I am terrified of fire. I was having a panic attack just calling 999 but they arrived so quick.
“The fire crew have my endless thanks for how quick they came and dealt with it.”
One neighbour thought the fire had been started deliberately.
They said: “There’s always problems at that flat. The amount of times the police have been called out
is ridiculous.”
Another neighbour said: “I got such a fright.
“A few people are saying it was drug users and they’ve maybe fallen asleep and left something on.
“I hope it’s not been deliberate as I couldn’t understand why anyone would deliberately do this when there’s so many other residents around.”
Police and a fire unit remained at the scene on Monday morning as investigations were carried out.
The flat was cordoned off as forensics wearing white boiler suits could cou be seen inside.
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service Ser spokesperson said there were we no suspicous circumstances surrounding su the blaze and no criminality cri had taken place.
“We were alerted at 9.56am on Sunday Su to reports of a house fire in Ayr,” Ay he said.
“Operations Control mobilised four fou appliances to the town’s Weaver Street Str where firefighters were met by a afi fire in a ground- floor flat.
“Firefighters helped lead one casualty to safety before passing the casualty into the care of paramedics.
“A second casualty had selfrescued prior to the arrival of crews. Both casualties were transferred to Ayr Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.
“Firefighters also helped lead a dog to safety before providing it with oxygen therapy. The animal was passed into the care of a local vet.
“Firefighters extinguished the fire and mad the area safe.
