Brick arch is blot on the old block

-

McCurdie said: “All that did was to blow the electrics in the security door and they are still not working.

“The brick is still a mess and nothing can be done to make it look better.”

The Taylor Street block is unique in the Newton Green area of Ayr and four of the flats are entered via an archway.

The entrance lobby stretches to the rear garden – where an identical brick arch HAS been roughcast.

The scheme is part of a huge insulation project underway in South Ayrshire.

Tenants in Taylor Street had waited four years for the cosy upgrade.

And Willie went on to say this week: “The roughcasters have done an amazing job and our homes will be warmer and should look great.

“But it is ridiculous to just leave a bit out.

“All of the other blocks in the area have been completely redone.

“The gaffer on the job refused to do it and said we should accept it as a feature.”

The early post war block was all the same brickwork until the insulation cladding was fixed in place.

A council spokesman has conceded the arch will now be painted over the blend in with the building.

He said: “The external wall insulation scheme running across South Ayrshire to improve energy efficiency has been extremely successful with 2,300 properties completed to date and satisfaction levels of 96%.

“Our tenant had his home insulated under the scheme and it was explained that only areas which lose heat could be clad.

“Insulating the decorative archway would not help to retain heat and that brickwork is not designed to be covered in cladding material.”

But he added: “We cleaned the brick work and the concrete lintels above the arch will be painted to match the rest of the property.”
