Stuart Wilson at Indodrill Stadium Birthday boy Mark Kerr admits keeping up with Ayr’s hectic schedule is testing his ageing legs.

But the player- boss, who turned 38 on Sunday, reckons his squad don’t mind the flurry of games – as long as they keep winning.

United ground out a vital three points at in- form Alloa as goals from Aaron Drinan and Alan Forrest kept them in the play- off hunt.

And Kerr joked: “At my age the schedule is murder.

“But we’ve enough young boys in our dressing room to carry me through it and ensure I don’t always have to play.

“I always felt when I was younger that the momentum was easier to keep up when playing on a Saturday and Tuesday.

“When you’re a young boy you always want to be playing, and we have plenty of lads who fit into that category.”

Ayr will need to dig deep into those reserves as they prepare for five games in the next 14 days.

But Kerr added: “I’m excited about it because we have a group of boys who are itching to get out on the park.

“We need to be on it and switched on in every game but the boys are up for it.”

Ayr owed much here to the heroics of Ross Doohan, who bounced back after his slip cost them a point against Morton last Tuesday.

Drinan’s early opener - a clever backheel from close range - had Ayr in the driving seat and they looked set to go on and dominate the game.

But Doohan was called upon to make a string of top saves as he twice denied

Kevin O’Hara and then Robert Thomson as the Wasps fought back.

Drinan smacked the post just before half time as Ayr hit on the counter attack, before going on to soak up a lot of second half pressure.

And they eventually killed the game late on with a stunner from Forrest.

Jordan Houston could have added a third at the death but was denied by a save on the line.

Alloa boss Peter Grant said: “We had a lot of the ball and created chances but weren’t clinical enough.

“We restricted Ayr to about three shots, so we’re disappointed.”
