Kirk’s legacy will live on thanks to trust

-

about sport. As a former captain of Ayr Rugby Club, Kirk always believed in the overriding benefits that participation in sport provides. He believed passionately that sport encourages dedication, good health and team work but that it is also an excellent opportunity to make new friends and have a laugh.

“In later life golf took over from rugby as his passion, and he even became an enthusiastic skier in his late fifties!”

Unfortunately, cancer came to take a terrible toll upon Kirk’s life.

On Christmas Day 2010 his beloved wife Julie passed away within a year of being diagnosed with non hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Following Julie’s death Kirk became an active board member of the Beatson Centre Charity. In 2015 Kirk himself was diagnosed with mouth cancer.

The former Ayr Academy pupil fought his illness for two years, with characteristic tenacity and humour, before he too passed away a few days after his 62nd birthday in March 2017.

Kirk’s son Gains said: “We all share Kirk’s values and want to do what we can to honour his legacy through helping make the lives of those afflicted with this terrible disease a little bit easier. On what would have been his 65th birthday we are so proud to begin our efforts.” To find out more about future fundraising events or make a donation go to www. kirkmurdochcharitabletrust. com email - thekirkmurdochcharitabletrust@ gmail. com.
