Children’s home given thumbs up by inspectors
A children’s home has been praised for it’s care and support in a recent report.
Sundrum View Children’s House in Coylton was rated ‘ Very Good’ for both ‘ How well do we support children and young people’s wellbeing’ and ‘ How well is our care and support planned’ following an inspection in December last year by The Care Inspectorate.
The purpose- built children’s house, which opened its doors two years ago, provides care and accommodation for up to seven children and young people.
The inspector spoke with young people, their families, carers as well as other professionals involved in the young people’s care and support.
The report noted the following: - Young people ‘ consistently experience nurturing and therapeutic care and support.’
- Those staying at Sundrum View felt, ‘ part of a family’, ‘ cared for and loved.’
- There is a ‘ culture of respect within the house’ where young people’s rights were championed, and their ‘ views influenced how the service operated.’
The Inspector also praised staff for the high expectations and ambitions they held for young people, particularly in relation to educational attainment.
Sundrum was not assessed on leadership, their staff team or how good their setting is.
The report said: “Almost all young people told us that they felt part of a family within the house.
“Staff cared for young people and most young people told us they felt cared for and loved.
“There was a culture of respect within the house and young people’s views influenced how the service operated.
“Respect and dignity were apparent in all interaction, including during incidents of challenging behaviours.”
It added: “Young people were actively supported to exercise a high degree of choice in their daily lives including taking part in activities and volunteering in the local community.”
Councillor William Grant, Portfolio Holder for Children and Young People for South Ayrshire Council, was happy with the report.
He said: “This is a great report and builds on the success of recent inspections.
“The ambitions of those staying at the house are central to the running of Sundrum View and staff go above and beyond to ensure the young people have every opportunity to build a positive future.
“I’m glad the important role young people play in decision making has also been recognised in the report; well done to everyone involved.”
