Mum blasts store giants after ‘ mobbed’ shopping trip

-

A mum claims supermarket bosses ignored lockdown rules by letting customers pile in to their store.

Eileen Connaughton-McCarthy hit out after a visit to her local Asda in Ayr left her stunned at “mobbed” scenes inside.

The mum- of- two, a childminder from Prestwick, claims social distancing measures were openly being flouted within the giant store.

Eileen, 50, said: “I couldn’t believe what I witnessed... it was like an ordinary day with families out for their shopping and aisles packed with people.

“The barriers were still up outside but there was nobody queuing so I just assumed it wasn’t busy.

“I asked the security guy if I could go in and he said yes. When I did it was mobbed, as if there was no lockdown.

“I’m quite a strong, level headed person, but by the time I got outside I had a panic attack, which I have never had in my life.

“When I got to my car I burst into tears, and cried all the way home.

“It’s like folk are fed up of lockdown or something and trying to go about their usual business again.”

Eileen says her trip last Wednesday morning has left her concerned that the public is starting to return to normality too quickly.

A spokesman for Asda insisted they were continuing to follow all the correct measures.

They said: “We have rolled out an extensive number of social distancing measures in our stores to help ensure that our customers and colleagues remain safe.

“We ask that our customers be respectful of each other and our colleagues throughout this time.

“We continue to follow Public Health England’s guidelines to protect our customers and colleagues in store including social distancing measures such as limiting the amount of people in store at any one time, two- metre markers, barriers at tills and other key points around the store amongst other measures.’”
