Time for a classic Georgian beauty

Rosebank built for a watchmaker

- STEPHEN HOUSTON

John Johnston must have been a rather successful watchmaker.

He owned the small Rosebank Estate and had his house built in the middle of it.

John died in 1829 and the estate broken up ( or wound up!) in the early part of the 20th century.

Other family homes were built around it and after WW1 the main house was split into two.

Fast forward to 25 years ago when Dr Brian and Kate Lennox snapped up the other conversion to house their growing family.

They had been at Rosebank for ten years and were set to move when the other slice came to market.

And it is thanks to the Lennox family the house became one again, a SEVEN bedroom beauty over 5120 sq ft.

They are now grandparents and selling up, allowing a new family to fall in love with this distinctive Georgian classic.

It is on sale with Ayr agent Galbraith at offers over £ 600,000.

You enter via Rosebank Crescent, obviously named after the house, which is close to St Leondard’s kirk.

Galbraith say: “It is built of stone with an aesthetically pleasing classic symmetrical frontage with pillars on either side of the front entrance, a plethora of original features including sash and case 12 paned windows, high ceilings, ornate cornice work, ceiling rose and wooden shutters.” What more could you want? You get three floors of accommodation with the potential to create an annex where the old maids’ quarters were.

You enter through the semi- elliptica porch with Roman Doric columns.

The comfortable sitting room and formal dining room have aspects to the front and sides of the property with wooden shutters, gas fires, and decorative cornice.

The library, which has double doors to the drawing room, also leads to the conservatory.

The drawing room has a multi- fuel stove, deep skirting, ornate cornice complete with a centre rose and two large windows.

As you would perhaps expect, the fittings in the kitchen and bathrooms are top quality. The grounds include garaging for three cars.
