Carlo: No easy way out mess

- STUART WILSON

Carlo Walker admits there was “no satisfactory outcome” for officials bidding to draw a line under the season.

The junior legend reckons clubs like Kilwinning are entitled to feel aggrieved at seeing league titles handed elsewhere.

But he insists the only right and proper way out of the mess was to null and void the campaign.

Carlo, a player and manager at Maybole for almost 25 years, said: “Realistically, there was no satisfactory outcome.

“For me, the only way was to null and void the season and then nobody could really complain like they are now.

“Whatever way they went, it was never going to be right for certain people.”

Junior chiefs have drawn criticism for handing Auchinleck the Premiership title despite trailing Kilwinning by 12 points.

And in the Championship, the title was SHARED by Blantyre and Darvel.

Walker admits the decisions don’t carry a good look and said: “These average points systems are all well and good for trying to work things out.

“Not that it would have affected us, but we’re a good example of a team who started terribly and barely won a game at the start of the season.

“Yet we won 12 of our last 14 and were on a brilliant run of form going into the latter part of the season.

“Form is such a big thing in football. “It would have been great if they could have done the average points on those last 14 games for us!”

Carlo is one of those ready to embrace the new- look West of Scotland setup as he bids to lead his Maybole revolution into the big time.

Extensive work off the park has seen the opening of the club’s new hospitality lounges and formation of new youth teams.

Carlo said: “We maybe had to take a step back to start making some real progress.

“For the first time I can remember, every single one of my players has told me they are coming back for the new season.

“That’s a testament to what we’re doing here and how much people are enjoying it.

“The new setup is going to be different and there is a feeling of... we’re all in this together.

“It’s a chance for clubs to go out and make a name for themselves and hopefully we can get back to playing as soon as possible.”

• Paul Cameron was named Maybole Players’ Player of the Year, with Jordan Banks winning Player of the Year.
