A SEA OF COLOUR ON VE DAY

County pays its respects in style

- PAUL BEHAN

Pockets of South Ayrshire showed some of that British Bulldog spirit on Friday as the county joined forces to commemorate the 75th Anniversary of VE day.

All over the district the Union Jacks were flying, bunting was laid out, balloons were blown up, the cakes were on display; drink was flowing and the unmistakable faint tones of Dame Vera Lynn’s immortal Wartime classic ‘ We’ll meet Again’ could be heard in many a back garden.

Even butchers Pollok Williamson got in on the act on Ayr High Street, as Clark McCrindle and Gary Ferguson dressed their popular portly mannequin in the Union flag.

Victory in Europe Day ( VE Day) is the day celebrating the formal acceptance by the Allies of World War II of Nazi Germany’s unconditional surrender of its armed forces on Tuesday, 8 May 1945, marking the end of World War II in Europe.

Despite the current lockdown, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the good people of South Ayrshire still made sure the 75th anniversary was marked with colour.

At 3pm on Friday, local police officers made sure they played their part, halting the traffic opposite their King Street HQ while Sgt Willie McClymont played ‘ Battle’s O’er’ as a mark of respect to those who gave their lives in the conflict.

Heading along the A70 through Coylton the colour cavalcade continued with scores of properties decked out in the red, white and blue, while in Mossblown, one family had their whole garden decked out thanks to the efforts of Anita Jeans, Agnes Kerr, Chloe McClelland, Tom Kerr and Denny Kerr.

And residents of Church Drive, Mossblown, held a socially distanced garden party – and some of them even dressed in period costume.

It was a similar story in Troon where residents held street parties with all the colours you’d expect from such an important day of remembrance, while at the South Beach Hotel, they did their bit too with lovely bunting adorning the entrance.
