Missing your old pub? Then make your own!

-

Bar regulars missing their local have built their own in the garden.

And the video they’ve posted online shows a hysterical take on what real life used to be like at the Wee Windaes in Ayr.

Paul and Pat Banks yearned for the natty banter within the Newmarket Street establishment after about nine weeks away.

So not only did they build their version of the boozer at their home in Castlehill, they got their son Peter to pretend he was the host Jim McSherry.

Paul, 67, a retired engineer at NATS in Prestwick, said: “I had worried I might get banned from the real place once normality finally returns.

“Jim buckled in laughter when he saw it, particularly when Peter pretended to go down the stairs to the cellar.

“I was worried he might bar me over this!”

The real Wee Windaes cellar is accessed via a trap door behind the bar and Jim often descends to check his pipes, barrels and fetch more crisps.

The ‘ Nae Windaes’ will remain in operation until pub lockdown is lifted, says Paul.

It features a gantry of spirits and some beer pumps made with plastic pipe and screwdrivers for handles.

And the “No Riff Raff ” sign in the real pub has been changed to “Riff Raff Allowed.”

Paul and Pat, 64, – a former ward clerk at Ayr Hospital – have been regulars at the Wee Windaes since Danny Kelly bailed out of Burroughfields.

Paul said: “The idea came to me when I said to my son Peter I fancied standing at a bar with a pint.

“We had a core of six other couples who we normally met in the Wee Windaes, now we Zoom.”

Jim was a pint- size midfield maestro with Ayr United and bitter rivals Kilmarnock.

This week the 68- year- old said he was really missing his regulars.

And he said: “The Nae Windaes looks great and it looks like I have some competition from the Banks family.

“I hope they receive a warm and friendly welcome like everyone does when they come into the pub!

“Never in a million years I thought I’d see the day when I missed the regulars, but I really do.

“It just shows you in these days of isolation that pubs really are the heart of the community, everyone will be missing each other.”
