Wear masks in shops and on transport
Having entered phase 1 of lockdown easing, I am sure many of you are enjoying seeing loved ones for the first time in many weeks, albeit it at an appropriate distance.
The good weather has certainly helped many of us cope better with the restrictions but, now that we are allowed to do that wee bit more, it may be tempting to gather with others at the beach and in the parks.
However, we all need to remember the virus is still with us and is just as aggressive and infectious as ever. Without taking the right precautions, it will get out of control again and send us right back to square one, so please follow the guidance closely.
Coronavirus is spread by respiratory droplets, through coughing or even loud speech, and wearing a face covering can reduce spread from those who don’t know they are infectious as they don’t have any symptoms. This is the uniquely challenging thing about COVID. I have been disappointed at how few people I have seen wearing face coverings but they should be worn when in enclosed spaces such as shops or on public transport. It is such a simple thing and the more people who wear them, the more we can reduce a symptomatic spread.
Along with social distancing and good personal hygiene measures, this will help get the virus under control.
Not surprisingly, Covid- 19 continues to dominate Parliamentary business and, via video link, I have been able to raise a number of issues regarding the UK Government’s handling of the outbreak. In terms of local issues, I have called for greater support for our key industries, including aviation, aerospace, tourism and fishing, all of which need tailored financial support to get through this current period and help them to rebuild sustainably in the long term. Whilst Prestwick Airport, and related businesses, have suffered from the huge drop in air traffic, it has been great to see it play such a key role in the supply of vital equipment over recent weeks. While my office remains closed, I plan to hold virtual surgeries across the constituency, the first of which will cover Prestwick and Monkton, followed by Troon and Loans.
