Stagecoach, which recently acquired Western Scottish, has also come under fire over its latest takeover of Ayrshire’s A1 Buses.

Cunningham­e South MP Brian Donohoe hit out: “This is a very sad day for Ayrshire and will inevitably lead to a major contractio­n in service to the travelling public.

“Jobs are also bound to go and the frequency and number of buses on the road will be reduced.

“At privatisat­ion of the Scottish Bus Group, we warned of the predatory ambitions of Stagecoach.”

50 YEARS AGO

Mr James Dinwoodie, Clover Park Cottage, Dunaskin, was guest of honour at a function given by colleagues and friends in the Eglinton Hotel, Dalmelling­ton, to mark his retirement as manager of the National Coal Board’s Dunaskin brickworks.

In making the presentati­on of a pair of binoculars to Mr Dinwoodie and a three strand blue crystal necklace to Mrs Dinwoodie, James Larmer, foreman engineer, said Mr Dinwoodie had completed 51 years service at Dunaskin.

100 YEARS AGO

Thanks to the energy of the executive of the Ayr Burgh Choir, writes Oculeus, a musical treat was brought to our doors, under the baton of Landon Ronald.

Seldom have I seen any finer conducting. There was a sort of mesmeric sympathy between conductor and players. He seemed to control them by some strange fluence from baton and finger tips.

He would pluck a sharp note from one instrument and draw in a volume of increasing sound. He struck fire by a thrust at the brasses, then extinguish gradually by gentle strokes.
