Quarter century of Graham’s distinctive character artwork

- STEPHEN HOUSTON

The show to celebrate a quarter century of his work was supposed to run throughout the summer.

But Troon artist Graham McKean has had to go virtual with an exhibition celebrating 25 years of his distinctive character led work.

And he revealed he has painted some coronavirus canvases inspired by his time in lockdown in a bedroom turned into a temporary studio at his Troon house.

Including dreams of driving a Porsche 911 by windswept Highland sea lochs and one of himself three quarters of the way through a bottle of scotch.

The Troon dad, 57, works from a studio in Irvine near the Harbour Arts Centre which was to run a real life exhibition gallery of his work.

That work has now gone virtual and can be seen on a video launched on the HAC Facebook page.

Graham revealed: “I had been working towards this show for a number of months and had planned to have around 100 framed prints and 25 original paintings.

“This was to show all aspects of my work over the last 25 years.

“However as we all know only too well the coronavirus came along and everything changed for us all.”

He has created a wee studio in a bedroom at home as he cannot access his workspace. And most of the originals for the 25 year show were painted in the bedroom.

Graham said: “With all my art I try and make pictures that lift my spirits and bring hope and humour to life.

“Producing art for me in this present situation is essential therapy and without this my mental health would deteriorate I am sure.

“I see many people are seeing that creativity can be great medicine to help get through these times and it gives people something they can share with others particularly with todays social media.”
