I am lucky to be alive after danger road crash

- RYAN CARROLL

A campaign has been launched to resurface a ‘death trap’ stretch of road after a string of accidents.

A teenage driver was in hospital in a serious condition after his car flipped in a horror smash on the A719 in Ayr last month.

The 19-year-old lost control of his Vauxhall Corsa and had to be treated at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow for his serious injuries.

That has prompted a petition to resurface the stretch of road between the Heads of Ayr Farm Park and Craig Tara Holiday Park.

Mum Kathleen Farnes has fronted the campaign after she too had a close call on the road last year.

Kathleen told the Post: “I’ve launched this because of the ridiculous amount of cars that have come off there in the past year.

“We just made it out alive and my close friend also had to make a serious recovery after they too came off at the exact same bit just after Craig Tara to the corner just past the Heads of Ayr Farm Park.

“And it’s not just us. I believe there’s been between 30 and 40 cars that have come off at this point of the road in the past year alone.

It’s a death trap.

“When it rains it spreads the oil from the two farms either side all over the road making it so slippy.”

Kathleen is demanding action from the Ayrshire Roads Alliance before there’s a fatality on the road.

She added: “We want that part of the road to be redone with anti skid surface.

“So many people have lost control of their cars there and this has to get done as soon as possible.

“We drive this road daily and it’s the worst we’ve seen – the accidents will only get worse.

“Please sign my petition so we can try to make sure this never happens again.”

A spokesperson for the Ayrshire Roads Alliance said: “We are aware of the petition which should be sent to South Ayrshire Council for their attention. With regards to the incident referred to, this is currently with Police Scotland Road Policing Unit.”
