Sadness as heart of village wilts

-

A popular family-owned business is to cease trading after 15 years, writes PAUL BEHAN.

Owners of the Craigiemains Home and Garden Centre, in Ballantrae Main Street, have revealed the business will close later this year.

They have stated that the decision was taken with a“heavy heart”and it’s understood that the current coronavirus pandemic and economic downturn has hit them hard.

It is unclear how many jobs are under threat.

It is, however, hoped that the premises can be leased out to another operator.

A statement on their Facebook page from Marie McCulloch, the garden centre’s managing partner, said:“It is with a heavy heart that we announce that, after 15 years of trading at Craigiemains Home and Garden Centre, we will be closing on the 14th September 2020.

“The Coffee Shop will not reopen after restrictions are lifted but the Garden Centre will continue to operate on reduced hours to sell the stock – which will be offered at a reduced price.”

Over the years the garden centre proved to be a great stop-off point for visitors travelling up and down the A77.

It was also handy for those who arrived at the ferry ports at Stranraer and Cairnryan and were looking for a gift before continuing their journeys north.

And top author and medic Dr Tom Smith, below, chose Craigiemains to launch one of his books.

Another feature was its miniature train which enjoyed its grand opening at Christmas 2012.

Customers have been quick to offer their condolences to the beleaguered business owners.

Ronnie Andrew said: “I used to work there when it was a farm 60 years ago and always had lunch there since it was opened when I come down to visit my parents’ grave.”

And Michelle Graham said:“It’s very sad.

“A very good garden and always busy wee place for locals and tourists.”

Simon Harris said he was “saddened”to hear the news, adding:“Unfortunately there will be many more businesses facing closure.”

The statement from Craigiemains added:“The decision has not been an easy one for the family to make but it is no longer feasible for us to continue to trade. We have had a great 15 years trading and we want to thank all our customers and staff for their support.”
