I am encouraged by the response of Brian Heddle and colleagues in last week’s issue regarding the future use of Ayr Grammar School.
A Heritage Museum would certainly be an ideal fit within the school building and, as discussions have been ongoing with the SAC for some time let’s break the logjam and get on with it.
My concern about the paintings presently located at Rozelle could be addressed in many ways within the town.
We have a wonderful opportunity with the new Portfolio Holder (Economic development and Tourism) wishing to make a positive impact on the further tourism potential of Ayr.
The three museums highlighted ie. The Museum of Slavery, The National
Museum of Curling and Ayr Heritage Museum, can be located within existing buildings in SAC ownership and with Grant Funding available as appropriate. This need not be a drain on financial resources but would be an investment that will repay dividends as future tourism surely develops.
The council’s curator can then have a real challenge and opportunity to exhibit the many artifacts and documents presently in storage and the many new items available.
This must be an all party effort within the council on behalf of the citizens of Ayr that all will applaud. Norman McLean Chairman, Fort Seafield & Wallacetown Community Council
