Jobfears forstaff atTrump Turnberry
Staff at Trump Turnberry have spoken of their job fears as the hotel gets set to reopen today (Wednesday).
The hotel group Trump Organisation, which owns the 827-acre Turnberry and the MacLeod lodge on the Menie Estate, Aberdeenshire, employ hundreds of people at the five-star sites.
Employees said they’ve been warned about their future as a union revealed bosses at the firm — including (below) US president Donald’s sons — could be held liable for furlough cash if jobs are lost.
But the Trump Organisation refused to say how many were affected.
Last week, Trump Turnberry general manager Ralph Porciani explained how the hotel team had implemented 92 new risk assessments ahead of reopening this week. One source
said: “It’s a disgrace that nobody from the hotel management has said anything about redundancies.
“I have a relation that still doesn’t know if she still has a job.”
Another claimed: “Sixty to eighty [jobs] is the ballpark figure. Its shocking they still don’t know if they are safe or not.” A spokesman for Unite the Union’s hospitality wing claimed any decision to cut staff could “spell trouble” for Trump’s sons, Eric and Donald Jr, in light of the UK government’s furlough scheme.
The brothers run the Trump Organisation after their father gave up the role when he became president. The union rep said: “We would urge the owners of the hotel to think twice before they make such a premature and illinformed decision which would devastate the livelihoods of so many loyal workers.”
Asked about a redundancy threat, Sarah Malone, executive vice president of Trump International Scotland, described the situation as “highly sensitive”.
She said: “Our valued team members are uttermost in our thoughts and at the heart of all our communication as we navigate our way through this difficult crisis in the weeks and months ahead.”
