Don’t demonise wardens
I am writing in relation to the Ayrshire Post’s front page story (July 8 2020): Meanie Streets).
This story was accompanied by a picture of two parking attendants carrying out their duties in the centre of Ayr.
I feel that by these images being published has placed these workers and their colleagues at a disadvantage.
Parking attendants are GMB Scotland Trade Union members and I am aware of the difficulties that they have to face on a daily basis which includes threats, abuse and intimidation.
I feel that this article will only add to what they already have to endure.
South Ayrshire Council workers have provided an excellent service during the lock-down from keeping school kitchens open ensuring that children still had access to a decent meal, refuse workers collecting household waste and carers still visiting elderly people in their homes.
As we move out of lock-down retail and other businesses will need every assistance to get our economy and our town centres functioning again.
There may well be a legitimate case to have parking restrictions reviewed as part of any recovery plan, but those arguments should be directed at those in power and who have implemented these schemes, rather than demonise low paid workers who are carrying out their day to day duties. Paul Arkison
