Workload quadrupled since March
To say the least, the last few months as Member of Parliament for Ayr, Carrick and Cumnock, have been extremely busy, demanding, occasionally very challenging but ultimately when the intervention of my staff and I have been able to help constituents – very rewarding.
Since March, with the Covid-19 pandemic, the Black Lives Matter campaign, other high profile campaigns and issues being raised by individual constituents which are important to them, we have seen the number of cases we have dealt with quadruple from what may be expected in a normal four-month period.
In addition to constituency work, I have been able to raise issues in the House of Commons including support for British Airways staff currently facing being made redundant and re-employed on much less favourable terms and conditions, asked the Prime Minister about the murder of WPC Yvonne Fletcher, who was shot in the back outside the Libyan Embassy in 1984 (for which no one has ever been charged ) - the Prime Minister has agreed to meet with me at No 10 this week to see how we can take this forward.
Further, I have also taken part in many other activities including Zoom video conferences in subjects as diverse as Aerospace, the persecution of the Bahai faith in Yemen, Wood (with specific reference to Eggers Barony in this constituency) and All-Party Political Groups on Scotland and Malawi and Choices at the End of Life.
The range of work undertaken by MPs can certainly never be described as uninteresting or lacking in variety!
Hopefully, the light at the end of the tunnel which has been Covid-19, is beginning to shine brighter, as we see the gradual easing of restrictions of lockdown taking place.
Please continue to keep safe and well and remember that face coverings (not masks) are still compulsory on public transport and in shops.
