Patience is key to transfer success

- STUART WILSON

Ayr boss Mark Kerr insists his patience in the transfer market will pay dividends ahead of the new campaign.

The United gaffer says he will open his cheque book when the time is right following talks with a number of targets.

And he is adamant Ayr have played things properly by not rushing into panic signings.

Kerr said: “We’re now in a position where we’ll start to see some things happening.

“We’ve done things the way we wanted and taken our time to properly assess our targets.

“It’s more important than ever that you’re bringing in the right type of boy, not just rushing out and signing players for the sake of it.”

Kerr admits Ayr’s pool will be slightly lighter on numbers than usual as they tackle a season which only begins in October.

And he will focus on attracting quality over quantity as he builds United’s challenge.

The 38-year-old, who remains one of Ayr’s key men on the park, will also continue to make himself available for selection.

He said: “I’ll not want to play as much as before but I will be fit and available and ready to go if needed.

“I’m certainly not ready to hang up the boots just yet.”

Michael Moffat and Steven Bell have re-signed on one year deals while Andy Murdoch and Aaron Muirhead have inked new two year contracts.

Meanwhile, Kerr admits the intervention of the Covid-19 crisis hampered Ayr’s bid to keep star full back Danny Harvie, who is on the verge of a move to MK Dons.

The boss said: “The contract to keep Danny was almost agreed just before everything happened with Covid.

“All credit to the board – they had done everything they could to keep him.

“We always said if a really good deal came in we couldn’t stand in his way.

“It’s just happened a lot sooner than expected through circumstances outwith our hands.”

Ayr’s new season will kick off on October 6 with the start of the Betfred Cup.
