JOE FITS THE BILL

Boss Kerr lauds capture of midfielder

- STUART WILSON

Mark Kerr this week hailed midfield ace Joe Chalmers as the man to help drive his Ayr United revolution.

Kerr ended a lengthy pursuit of the Ross County man yesterday as Chalmers penned a two year- deal at Somerset Park.

And the United boss is delighted his patience has paid off.

He told the Post: “Joe is one we’ve been tracking for a while so we’re delighted to get this done.

“He’s exactly what we need and has a fantastic range of passing from the middle of the park.

“His set pieces are different class and he’s going to be a big, big asset.”

Kerr added: “We’re bringing in boys who know how to manage games and Joe fits right into that category.

“He’s got good experience in the Championship and at the level above and it’s a great signing for us.”

Chalmers, 26, came through Celtic’s youth system before spells at Falkirk, Motherwell, Inverness and County.

He also represented Scotland at all youth levels, including two caps for the Under- 21s. And it’s another new face penning a longterm deal, much to the delight of Kerr. He said: “The board are showing great commitment, especially during very difficult times.

“All clubs are facing huge challenges at the moment so it’s brilliant to have that backing and fans can hopefully continue to buy their season tickets as well as all of that really does help us.”

United continue to run the rule over goalkeepers from down south but Kerr will again remain patient in getting the right man. He said: “We’ve been determined all along that we’ll add exactly what the squad needs, not just get someone in for the sake of it. “The loans from England have worked well for us in the past and clubs down there clearly see it as a good pathway for their players to come here.

“So we’re keeping our options open and having a look at one or two this week.”

• United are due to take delivery of their new away strip with the purple and green kit on sale in the club shop from the start of next week.

Pre- orders can be placed online now.
