Former MP launches comeback bid

- SARAH HILLEY

Former Ayr politician Corri Wilson has launched a bid for Holyrood power – but will have to take on a long standing SNP MSP first.

The well known independence campaigner from the town has entered the Scottish Parliament race for the SNP in Cunninghame North.

Kenneth Gibson has represented the constituency covering parts of North Ayrshire since 2007.

He has won the backing of MSP Jeane Freeman and MP Allan Dorans for re- election next May.

Ms Wilson, 55, said SNP party members asked her to consider standing in the area, which includes Ardrossan, Saltcoats and Largs.

The former Ayr East councillor said: “Whilst it’s not easy unseating a sitting MSP, it is right members have a choice.

“I’m sure if Kenneth has been doing a good job then he will have nothing to fear and will welcome the contest.”

She added: “If not, having worked with many activists from North Ayrshire over the last few years it’s clear to me there is an excellent, experienced group of committed people who want to be part of our journey going forward and I welcome that.

“I’m ready to take up the mantle and be a strong voice for Cunninghame North working with and for members and constituents alike.”

SNP members will choose their candidate during November in a ballot.

Ms Wilson said many MSPs were retiring and the gap should be filled with “experienced parliamentarians.”

The grandmother said her experience in Westminster and the private and third sector will be an “an excellent foundation for going forward to get Scotland back on track and to facilitate independence”.

Ms Wilson was elected as MP for Ayr Carrick and Cumnock in 2015 but lost the seat to Conservative Bill Grant two years later.

She said: “Cunninghame North is a beautiful part of the world but of course has its challenges.

“Along with local issues, the Brexit outcome and the recovery from the Covid pandemic there will be much work to do.”
