Hope as Covid spread shows signs of slowing

- RYAN CARROLL

There’s a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel as latest figures show the rate of coronavirus spread across Ayrshire could be starting to slow.

In the last seven days 642 positive tests have been recorded across the region.

That number is still high, but the previous week saw over 100 more cases when 759 were reported.

However the rate of hospital admissions and deaths have sadly continued to rise.

On Monday the number of people battling coronavirus in NHS Ayrshire & Arran hospitals surged past 100 for the first time in months.

A total of 102 patients were fighting the virus in the health board region – a rise of 14 from Sunday.

Eight people remained in ICU, the Scottish Government data revealed.

Latest figures also revealed eight NHS Ayrshire & Arran patients have died from coronavirus in the last week. That’s three more than the previous week.

A total of 205 people from Ayrshire have now passed away after testing positive for the virus.

Of the deaths in the past week one was from South Ayrshire, three were from East Ayrshire and four were from North Ayrshire.

Across Scotland, no new virus deaths were recorded on Monday, with the nation’s death toll for those having tested positive standing at 2,849.

However National Records for Scotland stats say 4,482 deaths have now been registered where Covid- 19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

Across Ayrshire 76 new cases of Covid- 19 were recorded on Monday. A total of 30 of those were in South Ayrshire while 23 were in East Ayrshire.

Across Scotland 951 cases were reported on Monday and 1,225 people were in hospital on Monday with Covid. Of these 93 were in intensive care.
