I have been following the current saga regarding the building of a new swimming pool at the Arran Mall and can’t help wondering what, if anything, is wrong with the current one at the Citadel.

It maybe in need of an upgrade but surely this would be a cheaper option than the 40 million quoted for it, when at the same time the proposed cinema complex in the Kyle Centre seems to have either been forgotten or died a death and the vacant plot of land at the former Woolworths site has still to see anything being done there.

Indeed was there ever an archeology dig conducted as was proposed and the citizens of Ayr being allowed to join in?.

I know that Covid19 has played a part in delaying things but surely it is within the councilors’ interests to at least keep us informed of things via the media. Kevan McCallum, Dalrymple

Sir,

Alec Oattes ( letters) suggests, possibly sarcastically, that I should stand for council.

Sorry Alec but it’s more important that this secretive council is held to account.

And trust me Alec there’s plenty to go at. Especially when you find out the new Leader after four years as a councillor thinks there are 186,000 people in South Ayrshire when in fact there are only c. 112,000!

So I will continue with my democratic rights to challenge the incompetency in the County Buildings if that’s OK with Mr Oattes and the cult.

As to his invoking “every other local authority” all bar three of the 32 Scottish Local Authorities support a Citizens Advice Bureau, as does Holyrood and Westminster.

Only South Ayrshire Council pays over £ 1m a year to legacy projects that exist nowhere else in the Western World and which are not visible in the Council accounts!

So Mr Oattes, the “whatever cost that may be” of a Citizens Advice Bureau to South Ayrshire Council – a better, professionally trained independent advice service operating under one of the most trusted brands in the UK, will, after a transition period, yield an annual saving in excess of £ 1m to the residents of South Ayrshire, even if there ever were to be 186,000 of them!
