D- day for 40 flats plan at harbour

- SARAH HILLEY

A plan for 40 flats in the Ayr harbour area is due to be decided by councillors this week.

The two seven storey blocks would sit on the former Ice Factory site and boast views out to sea.

The social housing bid would offer 27 one- bedroom flats and 13 homes with two bedrooms.

There have been 13 objections to the Ayrshire Housing planning application, which is aimed at residents aged over 55.

Designs from architects Page Park show a number of homes with balconies.

The blocks would be located in South Harbour Street beside the Waverley landing area.

A design and access statement said: “The proposal is inspired by the surviving lookout tower of the Citadel, which once marked the edge of the harbour.

“As the new development marks the

new edge of the harbour, each block is articulated by a series of feature look- out towers which face the sea and look back to the town.”

Objectors have voiced fears about parking and traffic, flooding, loss of views and property values among other worries.

Residents are also concerned about homes being overlooked and loss of daylight. Building work was due to start this year. If given the go- ahead there would also be 27 off street parking spaces and storage for bicycles.

South Ayrshire Council officials are recommending the homes be approved.

The planning application will be presented at the Regulatory Panel planning meeting on Thursday, November 12.

A council report said: “It is considered that the site context, buildings’ design and layout finish are satisfactory and together with the imposition of suitable planning conditions, will ensure an acceptable development.”
