Virtual tributes this year to the war dead

- ABI SMILLIE

South Ayrshire has vowed to remember our war heroes ‘ today and everyday’ despite Covid- 19 forcing the town to abandon remembrance plans.

Today ( Wednesday) marks Remembrance Day- the day we observe the end of the First World War and remember those who have died in the line of duty across all conflicts which have taken place since 1918.

Usual services, gatherings and parades have been axed due to the pandemic but South Ayrshire Council hope the community can still come together virtually.

Poppyscotland have worked hard to ensure that everyone can access the national symbol of Remembrance and support the Scottish Poppy Appeal 2020.

New technology has been made available to allow for safe processing of donations, including the Poppyscotland Virtual Field of Remembrance and contactless donations.

South Ayrshire provost Helen Moonie said: “There is no doubt that this year has been a challenging time for us all, and unfortunately the usual commemorative events of Remembrance cannot take place. Much of this year has helped us better understand the things we hold in common and our shared humanity, all of which are reflected in the work of the Commonwealth and allied nations who have continued to stand together and protect us throughout the years.

“On Remembrance Day 2020, I am proud to say thank you. Today and every day we will remember.”

South Ayrshire Council will commemorate Remembrance virtually across their social media channels Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
