- SARAH HILLEY

Coronavirus cases have dropped in South Ayrshire since Level 4 restrictions were enforced in the area.

As the area moved into tier 3 on Friday the number of people testing positive showed a decrease compared to last month.

Neighbourhoods, which previously experienced highs of more than 20 Covid cases, including Ayr’s Dalmilling, now shown a significant drop.

Craigie has zero to two cases while Castlehill and Kincaidston has the highest number in South Ayrshire at 11.

The virus has been “suppressed” in five areas.

South Ayrshire’s weekly number of positive tests per 100,000 people stands at 110 according to Public Health Scotland.

That number is down from 154 cases per 100,000 people between November 12 and 18.

Councillor Martin Dowey said: “These are welcome figures. Being in lockdown is a struggle for everybody. Businesses have been suffering.

“I encourage everybody to shop locally and stay safe.

“Hopefully, we can enjoy a bit of respite at Christmas.”

Restaurants, cafes and non- essential shops have now reopened after being forced to close on November 20.

Ayr was packed during the weekend as people turned out in force to do Christmas shopping.

People are still not allowed to leave their local authority area to buy gifts.
