MAKE OUR POINTS

- STUART WILSON

Mark Kerr insists his Ayr players must show urgency to rack up vital points in their shortened season.

United have lost just one of their opening seven Championship fixtures.

But after a third draw of the campaign on Friday night, Kerr admits putting wins on the board has never been more important.

He said: “It’s crazy to think that almost a third of the season is already away.

“The game hasn’t changed so you prepare and set up just the same.

“But the pressure is definitely a bit different this season.

“I said to the boys this week that we need to be brave on the ball and make things happen.

“We are looking very strong defensively but you need to use that as your base to have confidence going forward.”

Ayr created the better chances in front of the BBC cameras against Raith but failed to hit the target.

And Kerr said: “When you’re not at your best, the main thing is not to lose games. So it’s pleased me that we’re looking so solid.

“Defensively I cannot question the boys at the moment.

“We are making ourselves hard to break down and the organisation throughout the whole team is great.”

Ayr now begin a run of f festive fixtures with a trip to Arbroath on Saturday.

Tom Walsh will be available for selection following a period in Covid isolation after being contacted by Track & Trace.

Cammy Smith returns from suspension. And that means Ayr will head to Gayfield with a fully fit squad. Kerr said: “It will be great to have everyone available, it provides me with options again.

“When you go to Arbroath at this time of the year, you are braced for what you’re going to get in terms of the weather – it’s never an easy afternoon.

“But hopefully the wind will be kind to us and we can play our style of football.”
