Two schoolboys have turned golf ball hunters as part of a quirky hobby earning them extra pocket money.

Brothers Fraser Donnachie and Adam Pritchard are hitting the fairways around Ayr to hoover up players’ lost shots.

And the Doonfoot Primary duo have been snapped up by a quickly growing business venture which is reselling thousands of refurbished balls to eager golfers.

The youngsters are a regular sight combing the fairways of Belleisle, Seafield and Dalmilling on the hunt for lost balls.

More than 1,000 have been collected by the ace team in the last few months as they help supply Ayrshire Discount Golf Balls.

The new business is run by students and keen golfers Campbell Mathieson and Andy Bogle and has proved a huge hit since launching in lockdown.

The boys’ mum, Lisa, said: “We’d seen an advert appealing for collectors to help supply this new business and thought Fraser and Adam would be perfect.

“The young one, Adam, in particular would spend his entire day on the golf course if he could.

“They’re both keen players and absolutely love the game and they treat these lost balls like treasure.

“Whenever they find one, they add it to their collection and are out on the courses either every day or every second day.

“It’s really enjoyable for them and has been a brilliant way of keeping them active during lockdown.

“The guys even gave them UV torches to keep searching

when the light wasn’t so good and their eyes just lit up – they were so excited.

“I tend to get dragged out with them but I don’t mind it at all, they’re loving it and that’s the main thing.”

The duo quickly impressed Campbell and Andy with their sheer rate of return and are now earning cash for their haul.

Campbell revealed: “The boys are so keen and that’s the best thing about it.

“They clearly love being out and about on the course and they really know their stuff when

it comes to the golf balls.

“They know all the different brands and we’re delighted to have them on board.

“They’ve become an important source of our supply and allowed us to look at expanding the business beyond our initial starting point.”

The business, which donates a portion of its proceeds to Whiteleys Retreat, has already handed over more than £ 1,000 to the charity.
