Plans submitted for church repair mission
Plans have been submitted to carry out necessary repairs to the masonry at Tarbolton Parish Church.
A planning application has been lodged with South Ayrshire Council, seeking approval for “limited” repairs to the 200 year- old church in Cunningham Street.
A report, prepared by architects ARPL, Ayr says: “The application for Listed Building Consent relates to limited masonry repairs to the front elevation of the building and is submitted by recommendation of a South Ayrshire Council planning officer.
“The repair and conservation approach is minimal intervention and like- for- like repair.
“The front elevation is tooled ashlar masonry and is suffering from weathering.
“Particularly window and door jambs are affected, which were installed in a way that bedding planes of the sandstone run vertically, thus layers are detaching in vertical sections.
“We propose replacing badly eroded sections with partial indents and stabilising those sections that can be retained.”
The applicants also go on to say that replacement masonry will be selected from samples, choosing one with “the closest mineralogical properties and characteristics.”
In addition, localised “descaling” of loose material and localised “re- pointing” using lime mortar suitable for ashlar masonry will be carried out.
The report ends: “Completion of these works will ensure the historic fabric is secured for future generations to enjoy.”
The planning application was validated on Sunday, December 27 and is now “pending consideration” by the local authority.
Tarbolton Parish Church was built in 1821 to replace an earlier place of worship.
