End of an era

Lachlan Cameron

Dutch football legend Ronald Koeman tells wonderful stories about his nights in Barcelona after he LEFT the club that made him a Catalan legend! The big defender used to return to Barcelona regularly as a TV pundit – and was always fondly remembered by grateful restauranteurs and bar owners who were also Barca fans. No matter where he went – whenever he asked for‘la cuenta por favor’– a smiling owner would suddenly appear to tell him his tab was‘on the house’

Famously, his embarrassed wife challenged him to find a place in the city where he could go unrecognised.

Koeman bought a hat, a pair of extra- thick spectacles, and took his wife to an alleyway bar in a quiet barrio miles from the city centre. After spending an anonymous half hour over some beers and coffees – he confidently asked for the bill.

Seconds later, the owner rushed to his table.“Senor Koeman,”he said, “My brother is an optician. He can get you contact lenses. Those glasses are awful!”Well, Somerset Park isn’t quite the Nou Camp, and Lachlan Cameron is no Ronald Koeman.

But if the former Ayr United chairman ever needs a cold one – or maybe a 25 year old one – I know a pub where he’ll get both.

No charge every time without limit of time.

Every Ayr United fan should be eternally grateful to the big man. Why? Well that’s simple. I reckon – without Lachlan Cameron and his father Donald – there would be no Ayr United to be a fan of.

So, good luck Lachlan.

And don’t try any tricks.

A hat and a pair of thick glasses won’t work for you either!
