Raiders terrify kids

Mum hits out at thieves with baseball bat

- RYAN THOM

A brave mum used a baseball bat to fight off two brazen thieves who burst into her flat and made off with her children’s home-schooling computers.

Plucky Kerry-Ann Quinn, 35, had been left stunned by the daylight robbery after two people barged into her home to rob her three children – Leo, 10 Kelvin, 7 and Finlay, 6 – of their smartphones, laptops and a tablet.

The cowardly culprits then escaped by locking the door while frightened Kerry-Ann and her children were inside. The mum-of-three told the Post: “I was in my room getting ready when I heard a mobile phone ringing which was like an old Nokia tune. I left my room to head to the living room and there were two people walking out the living room door.”

Taking action on the thieves, Kerry-Ann took a swipe at them with a baseball bat, catching one of them before they headed out the door.

Kerry-Ann says this is the latest in a series of incidents where people are able to enter the close of her flat as she along with neighbours are desperate for a secure door entry.

A mum had to use a baseball bat on two brazen thieves who waltzed into her flat, stole her kids home-schooling technology and then escaped by locking the door.

Kerry-Ann Quinn, 35, has been left stunned by the morning robbery when two people walked into her Maybole home to rob her three children – Leo, 10, Kelvin, 7, and six-year-old Finlay – of their smartphones, laptops and a tablet.

The mum-of-three was getting ready after a shower when the crooks entered the flat in the town’s Kirkland Street.

One of them was described as a middle-aged man. His accomplice lifted the expensive equipment used to help the children during the Covid lockdown from the living room.

Kerry-Ann told the Post: “I was just in my room getting ready when I heard a mobile phone ringing which was like an old Nokia tune. I left my room to head to the living room and there were two people walking out the living room door.

“I met them face on as I walked out of my room.

“One was definitely a guy because I could see his face, he was short and stout and in his 50s and wore a black bomber jacket and dark trousers and a beanie hat.

“He had a flattened nose like a boxer’s. “The other one was tall and slim – it might not have been a guy, the zip of their jacket was right up over their face and they also had a black jacket zipped up and a beanie.

“They brushed past me and headed for the door. They never spoke to each other, it was so strange, as if I was invisible to them, I didn’t even feel real.”

Taking action on the thieves, plucky Kerry-Ann took a swipe at them with a baseball bat, catching one of them before they headed out the door.

But to make a strange situation even more bizarre, the raiders escaped her flat and locked the door behind them.

The Post were also informed that two days later the laptop was left outside on top of the bins at the flats – but Kerry-Ann confirmed that it is ruined after being in the rain.

Kerry-Ann said: “I ran into the living room in a panic to check things – my keys were sitting on the sofa.

“They had a key, so they came in using that, as I lock my door every night.

“The police found it really strange as well, it’s a new door that I’ve got. It doesn’t make sense.”

Kerry-Ann’s kids have been left devastated by the theft.

The mum said: “My kids were so upset, it is rubbish. They have had their bikes stolen before at our previous flat.

“This was supposed to be a fresh start for us, but it is like throwing the frying pan into the fire.”

Kerry-Ann says this is the latest in a series of incidents where people are able to enter the close of her flat as she along with neighbours are desperate for a secure door entry.

The mum has had to regularly deal with drug users at the bottom of the stairs in the property and one neighbour told the Post that her TV was stolen just before Christmas in a similar house breaking.

Kerry-Ann said: “We are getting nowhere, we are a cut-through for everybody. We are always on to the housing to get the problem fixed.

“I have to walk by people all the time, smoking joints or pipes

“If we hadn’t been in, would I have come back to anything at all?

“It is going to take something serious to happen, before a change is made.”

Police confirmed they are investigating the raid.

A force spokesperson said: “We received a report shortly after 7am on Monday, 25 January, in relation to a break-in at a property on Kirkland Street in Maybole.

“Electronic devices were stolen during the incident. Police enquiries are ongoing.”

A council spokesperson said: “The safety and wellbeing of our tenants is always a priority.

“A repair was carried out to the door late last year and another repair is due to take place shortly.

“The door is scheduled to be replaced this year.”
