Second outbreak of virus at care home
A nursing home where 22 patients died of coronavirus last year is at the centre of a new COVID-19 outbreak.
Berelands House Care Home in Prestwick’s Boydfield Avenue has been hit once again with the killer bug.
The total numbers of those affected have not been disclosed but sources close to the care home say that as many as 15 residents and three members of staff have tested positive for COVID-19.
A Berelands House Care Home spokesperson said: “We are working very closely with all the relevant authorities, regularly testing staff and residents, and liaising with families. Staff are following all protocols and necessary precautions, and vaccinations have been rolled out at the home for staff and residents.
“The home is closed to new admissions and non-essential visits in line with government guidelines, and our amazing
staff are working throughout this difficult time to provide the best possible care.”
The Post reported last June how the death toll at
the Prestwick care home hit by coronavirus rose to 22. At the time, bosses at Berelands House Care Home confirmed two residents lost their lives.
Those tragic deaths followed 20 people passing away with suspected COVID-19 during the month of April.
Owners the Priory Group were contacted on Monday by the Ayrshire Post but they failed to provide information surrounding when the vaccination programme began, the numbers of people who have tested positive and/or any updates on their condition.
Ayr MSP John Scott said: “The fact that Berelands Nursing Home has apparently been struck by a second Covid outbreak is utterly awful news. Quite rightly the focus must be on dealing with the outbreak and offering all the support and information needed. However, the wider community needs reassurances too. It seems reasonable that some indication should be given as to the extent of the outbreak and confirmation and information provided on the vaccination programme provided within the home. I’ve been in touch with the Cabinet Secretary for Health to raise this matter with her, and to ask for her involvement in providing such information and assurances to Prestwick residents, many of whom will be understandably concerned.”
